KALEYRA OBSERVATORY: Cyber Monday sales are increasingly on the rise, with 3.5 million transactions recorded this year, catching up on Black Friday, when 3.9 million certified operations via SMS were registered from Italian banks.

Milan, 28 November 2018 Kaleyra presents the latest figures from its Observatory regarding the number of SMS sent from banks to their current account holders and holders of payment cards in Italy during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Kaleyra is an international group specialized in providing mobile messaging services for banks and for companies of all sizes. It has a privileged observation point, with 25 Italian banks using this company for the management of their messaging services, such as SMS alerts. The figures collected are therefore based on the monitoring of the volumes generated by messaging services for online, mobile or POS transactions made by the users. The Observatory is activated periodically with the aim of monitoring the volumes generated by messaging services, thus providing an overview of the current trends in Italy with regard to the adoption of mobile services linked to current accounts and payment cards.

CYBER MONDAY VS BLACK FRIDAY

In just one day, Cyber Monday generated a boom in transactions, with 3.5 million SMS traveling on Italian mobile networks on Monday 26 November. This figure is in line with last year, although this year it has gained ground from Black Friday, on which transactions fell slightly compared to the previous year, with 3.9 million notifications, down from 4.4 million in 2017.

This latter phenomenon can be explained by the fact that, in addition to increasing involving brick-and-mortar stores, for the most part, Black Friday purchases – despite the name – are increasingly being spread over the whole of the preceding week, while Cyber Monday remains an e-commerce event and is concentrated into the Monday alone.

Overall, if we consider the whole period from the Friday before Black Friday up to Cyber Monday, sales have risen substantially, up from 26.3 million in 2017 to 36.7 million in 2018.

“Once again, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have proved highly successful from a commercial point of view. It is interesting to see that Cyber Monday has grown slowly but constantly, while Black Friday has recorded higher peaks together with some dips. The figures show a continuation of a trend we noticed also in previous years, with a lower peak recorded on Friday, largely due to the fact that promotions are spread over the whole Black Friday week organized by e-commerce platforms”, explains Alex Milani, Managing Director of Kaleyra.
